Student Charged in Appalachian Hoax

•  Court Watch     updated  2008/03/06 20:46

Police say an Appalachian State University student whose story of a masked gunman near campus led to a campuswide lockdown has been charged with filing a false report.

Boone police Investigator Matt Stevens said Friday that Matthew Whitney Haney is charged with one count of misdemeanor filing of a false police report.

Stevens said the 22-year-old was free on a $500 unsecured bond. A magistrate set a court date of April 22 in Watauga County District Court.

Haney does not have a listed telephone number and it wasn't known if he has an attorney.

Officers converged on the university campus and buildings were locked for more than an hour after Haney told police about the gunman. Stevens said Haney later admitted he made up the story.
